Apr 14, 2025To know Amy is to know kindness, and to know what it’s like to feel genuinely cared for by someone. Amy serves as our team’s prayer and care leader, but she’s also a fantastic mentor! Amy recently shared her story and wisdom on caring for others who are battling life-threatening illnesses in one of our workshops. We’re thrilled to introduce her as the mentor of the month and team spotlight!
Tell us more about you and your role for MORE!
I am a blessed woman! I am married to my high school sweetheart (39 years!), a mom to three amazing children, a mother-in-law to a dear young lady, and a first-time Grandma to a beautiful little granddaughter! I am a registered nurse and even ran my own wellness business for 6 years. I love to serve and help others, so being part of MORE Mentoring as their Prayer Team and Care Team Lead fills my heart with joy. I lead a monthly prayer team gathering where we pray for the ministry and its impact in the lives of people worldwide. And as part of the care team, I am the go-to person for whatever is needed for team meetings and events, birthdays, or holidays. We are all a family at MORE!
In our January workshop, you shared your story about battling breast cancer and all of the challenges that came with that. What was a time or situation that you saw God really show His love and peace during that time?
It is so hard to narrow this down because God walked so closely with me every step of the way! God showed up through the kindness of others… meals, childcare, anonymous financial gifts, etc. God whispered encouragement through His Word to my heart and through a special song, “The Revelation Song,” which He played on the radio every day while I drove to radiation for seven weeks! I think it was the first time I could say that I heard His voice in my heart. He is amazing! I think one instance that stands out for me was the day of my surgery. I was praying for my husband who would be waiting all alone. As soon as I finished that prayer, our pastor called my husband and said he was on the way to sit with him. What a gift! God hears, knows, and provides… always!
Who is a mentor who had a big impact on your life, and how did this mentor challenge and shape you?
My mentor, Penny, would be the person God has used to guide and shape me in many ways. She exudes dependence on God and the joy of the Lord. She shared her struggles in a real, authentic manner. The way she lived her life showed how she relies on God for all things. She challenged my prideful heart and taught me about grace and humility and intentionality. She modeled Jesus—His love and wisdom and surrender. She led a discipleship group that I was blessed to be part of during my battle with cancer. I’m so grateful for her!
Why is mentoring (being mentored and mentoring) important to you?
I think that mentoring/being mentored is something God has designed. He knew we would need help in this life! Having someone who loves the Lord walk alongside me, pray for me, guide me, and point me back to Jesus has been transformative for my faith and life. And being able to do that for someone else is truly a blessing. To show the love of Jesus through mentoring another person is a gift!
“Before cancer, I knew about God. After cancer, I know God.” You said this in our workshop and it was SO POWERFUL! Tell us more about this!
Before cancer, I was a Christian. I believed in God, but I didn’t really know God. I was learning and growing but didn’t have that deep, intimate relationship with Jesus. When I was diagnosed with cancer, my world was shaken to pieces. I had no control over what was happening. My heart was laid bare and truly surrendered to the Lord. That is when I felt His presence so near, heard His gentle voice in my heart, experienced His amazing grace faithfully working in my life with such love. We never walked alone. I KNOW who He is now, and I can discern His voice. HE IS FAITHFUL! I have a deeper relationship with Jesus and am better at extending grace. But I certainly don’t do that perfectly!
Tell us more about what you do now and the fire God has ignited within you!
I am a stay-at-home wife and mom currently. We moved a few years ago and some days I feel like I’m still getting settled! But it has given me the opportunity to help where needed. God has shown me that I am wired to serve. For many years I sang on a worship team, served as a deaconess, and was a Bible study leader. He continues to bring women into my life who are in their battle with breast cancer, and I can share my journey and heart and time with them. I have been blessed to serve my family and friends both near and far. I want them all to know Jesus!
What brings you joy?
Being the hands and feet of Jesus by helping others, praying with and for them, singing praise to the Lord, spending time with family and friends, and enjoying the Colorado sunshine! God’s glory is displayed in nature!
Tell us some rhythms you do that are life-bringing for your health—mind AND body.
I have had several health challenges the past two years, so clean nutrition, exercise, good sleep, and sunshine have been such gifts from the Lord! He has blessed me with quality medical care and friendship for support. I love to walk and talk to Jesus! Nancy Lindgren and I will go on prayer walks together, which has been a new life-giving experience. Daily time with Jesus helps to center my heart and mind, to prepare me for what may be ahead. And I find that Bible reading is a great way to end my day and invite peace into my heart.
What advice would you give to others who feel called to do something (like mentor or lead) but are feeling afraid?
I totally get it. I still struggle with that myself. Something I have learned to say to myself is, “Feel the fear and do it anyway!” When I have stepped out in faith, God has worked through me and for me in ways I never could have imagined. Proverbs 3:5-6 comes to mind… “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. Acknowledge Him in all your ways and He will make your paths straight.” He is faithful, and He truly will be with you.
