Oh Darling, Please Speak Up

god's love mentorship speak up worthy May 20, 2020

By Hannah Pipp

I want you to be known.

I want you to be seen beyond what you can do.

I want you to believe that others care.

They aren’t bored out of their minds.

They want to know your heart,

Not your shallow disguise.

I want you to know that your needs are not a burden.

You are not an emotionless person.

You are not a brick wall!

Sometimes ‘the listener’ needs to be heard,

Don’t panic, start small.

I want you to know that you’re welcome at My table.

No, not for pleasantries.

I want you there.

I want to share.

I want to serve.

I want to listen.

I care. I feel. I know.

It’s terrifying to arrive when your insides want to die,

But they’d never know it

Under the piles and piles of “Not much, I’m doing fine.”

Listen to your heart.

Listen to Me.

You don’t need to have a pristine, profound word.

You don’t have to try to be deep or unique.

You are beautiful.

You are loved.

You are enough.

Oh darling, please speak up.

I will be glad and rejoice in your unfailing love, for you have seen my troubles, and you care about the anguish of my soul. Psalm 31:7

These are words I wrote in my journal at a time when I was feeling inadequate and unworthy of relationship. They were not words that were easy to believe, but I felt the Lord compelling my pen forward. I had discovered in myself a longing to be seen by others and by God, but I did not know how to pursue it. Fear of failure and rejection kept me from reaching out. Since then, I have learned that the gift of relationship is worth the risk of being real.

Mentorship focuses on being together, but for me, this word has taken on a new meaning: to-get-her — to get the girl who is always the listener to speak up, to get the girl who hides behind a mask of intellect or humor to see that her heart holds value too, to get the girl who overthinks her every word to speak in a posture of uncertainty, to get her to see that she does not have to be perfect or without need. She can be seen for who she is underneath. We can choose to be self-sufficient, or we can allow another to be like Jesus to us.

God wants us to delight in relationship with Himself and others. He wants His love to become real to us. He wants to teach us about His character, and I believe He has and will continue to reveal His great love and provision for His people.

The gentle words of godly women have painted for me a picture of my heavenly homeland. These conversations have shown me that community is good and beautiful and necessary. The Lord cares deeply for each and every one of us. All are welcome at His bountiful table. The gift is worth the risk.

For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things. Psalm 107:9
